“Fasting is the greatest remedy… the physician within. I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency.” Plat’’s wisdom stuck with me years ago, and to this day, I continue to make fasting a part of my daily rhythms.
An ancient practice
Being the buzzword for health these days, fasting is actually a practice that dates back centuries, and whether you choose intermittent fasting or extended fasting, or you decide to integrate both into your lifestyle, fasting has shown to have many benefits (backed by science).
Some quick fasting benefits to take note of:
- Improves energy levels
- Stimulates fat burning
- Reduction in chronic inflammation
- Cellular autophagy stimulated
- Increases stem cell activity
- Repair and regeneration of the digestive system
- Improves insulin sensitivity
- Reduces chronic disease risk
- Improves relationship with food
- Improves spiritual health
- Boosts metabolism
- Stimulates detoxification
Find what works for you
Fasting can be introduced at your own pace and find what works best for you. Focus on the gains and not the perceived “losses” while you fast. Keep the end goal in mind. Whilst fasting, I often take time out to meditate, whether I engage my spirit or actively visualise health surging through my cells. Be kind to yourself, celebrating the journey you’re on.
Don’t fast if
Fasting is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, children under the age of 12, if you’re on meds or have a chronic disease, have Type 1 Diabetes, or if your body fat is 5% or below.
If you are struggling with any of these or are navigating an eating disorder, reach out to one of our Thrivists who will come along side you and support you in walking through this. You’re never alone.
I’d like to close off this blog with a gentle thought.
