Digestive bitters are herbs that support digestive function and are critical in building a Radical Metabolism. Digestive bitters stimulate bitter receptors on the tongue, stomach, gallbladder and pancreas. Their primary effect is to promote digestive juices such as stomach acid, bile and enzymes to breakdown food and assist in the absorption of nutrients. This home made digestive bitters recipe will yield a tonic to improve digestion whilst relieving bloating, gas, indigestion. and heartburn.

Ingredients

 2 Sprigs fresh Rosemary
 1 ½ tbsp Dried ginger root
 2 tbsp Dried gentian root
 1 ⅕ tbsp Dried dandelion root
 2 tbsp Dried angelica root
 ¼ Rind/ peel of an organic orange
 ½ Rind/ peel of an organic lemon
 240 ml Organic vodka

Instructions

Sterilize a large (350ml) Mason Jar with hot water.

Add the orange and lemon peels, angelica, gentian, rosemary sprigs, ginger and dandelion to the clean jar.

Add the vodka to the jar, leaving a small space at the top so that the contents can be shaken. Tighten the jar with the lid and shake.

Store in the jar a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks, shaking 1-2 minutes every day to break down the plants’ cell walls and draw out all the active medicinal properties.

After 2-4 weeks, strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a nut milk bag and squeeze the excess liquid from the herbs. Pour into amber glass dropper bottles and store in a cool, dark place.

How to Use Digestive Bitters:
Digestive bitters can be dropped directly onto the tongue or mixed into a small amount of pure water or sparkling water. If you frequently experience digestive discomfort, we recommend taking one dropperful of bitters (about 1/4 teaspoon) 10-15 minutes before meals.

To relieve gas and bloating specifically, take one dropperful of bitters (about 1/4 teaspoon) 10-15 minutes before a meal to ignite your digestive system.

To relieve heartburn and indigestion specifically, take one dropperful (about 1/4 teaspoon) of bitters immediately after a meal to soothe your digestive system.
