Neuroplasticity – Plastic Brains

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Myth or truth?
Myth.

By now we should all know this to be a myth, but what, exactly is neuroplasticity and what does it mean for individuals?

A good definition of neuroplasticity is “the ability of the nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic or extrinsic stimuli by reorganising its structure, functions, or connections.”

The brain makes structural, functional, and connective changes based on internal and external stimulus, thus changing the way we mentally and physically function.

In other words, our brains (or rather neural connections) have the ability to learn and form and regenerate throughout our lifespans. I have the ability to become the best version of myself. I am not stuck in a predefined concept of limitations. My past does not define me. I am able to change.

Your brain can learnRefreshing? Or frightening?

What does this mean for you, personally?

In light of this awareness, we’re all placed in a position of choice. If I am aware of the amount of control I truly have over my own life, do I feel compelled to grow, or scared into revoking control and responsibility and rather turning towards my familiar.

This is a question we need to meditate on. Find a safe answer to land in and ask yourself why.

So now what?

Grow. Improve your neuroplasticity.

Three simple cores to bathing the brain in a helpful context primed for neuroplasticity and growth are:

  • Eating a healthy diet,
  • Exercising regularly, and
  • Connecting with people.

According to Dr Michael Ruscio (August 2021), “Neuroplasticity training is anything that helps create or change neural connections in the brain. This can range from occupational therapy exercises for stroke patients, to mindfulness for anxiety. Different parts of the brain are trained depending on what you are trying to improve. Neuroplasticity training requires repetition, meaning you train the brain over time, so consistency is key.”

Many neuroplasticity training programs involve specifically targeted mind-body modalities including meditation or mindfulness training, breathwork, visualisation, cognitive behavioural therapy, and emotional restructuring therapy. At Made To Thrive, we have incredible coaches who are skilled at these techniques.
